Behavioral and Physiological Correlates of Ostracism

A model of social interaction is outlined and used to interpret behavioral and physiological correlates of ostracism. Reported findings suggest that several physiological systems contribute to behaviors that are associated with ostracism and that these as well as other systems are involved in responses to being ostracized. The ideas discussed in this article suggest that future research should (I) identify persons who may be genetically predisposed to engage in behaviors associated with ostracism, and (2) identify persons who are physiologically vulnerable to being ostracized.
